RNC Romance Convention Countdown!

I have 5 1/2 months left to get myself ready for the Romance Convention sponsored by Jimmy Thomas and RNC in Las Vegas!

Swag items are my hardest thing to figure out, next is graphics for advertising as I have not yet decided on any type of logo for myself, and the logo I have for Indie Author Network is not cutting it...so nails are down to the quick, and anxiety is high.

I HAVE paid for mostly everything, so it is just a matter of getting everything to the right people in time. So, my next biggest question...How many books to bring? I will be setting up a table for author signing and books sales, I will have some freebies too so make sure you stop by and see me!

G.D. Steel and G.D. Canning items will be featured.

Come to the link and see if one of your favorite authors will be there, then stop in and get a signature!

O.K. off to make some decisions...

See you there!

Newbie Writers Marketing 101

You have done it! You have completed your first book and have placed it on the 'to be sold' list of one of the many ebook and POD companies out there. Many of them tell YOU how much to list your price for, and with a minor adjustment or two, you have calculated your 'profit' per sale.

What next? I tell you, it is now only beginning. You have to go out to your local market and bust your butt trying to get an Author Signing, Reading, Library Appearance, Speaking Engagement. Try some local shops where your book would be a good fit.

Join the Chamber of Commerce, Local Writing Groups, put in your own ad in the local newspaper.  If you have tried a press release and they did not use it, call the Editor and ask if they will do a human interest piece on you. Don't forget the RADIO!  I know it isn't what it used to be, but you can still get in on a local show during their off peak hours with their local events spots. This is especially useful once you have an event planned. FREE ADVERTiSING!

OK, maybe you have hit it big with your fan base and people are starting to take notice. You are asked to be a speaker at a convention!  Or, maybe one of the authors at the 'signing booths'.  This my friend, is where things can get a little harder on the budget!   My recommendation is once you have completed the paperback POD book, budget in a monthly allowance for you to 'buy' your own books using the author's print price. Build up a small stock so when there is an event, you do not have to buy a large bulk order, which can get into the thousands for a convention like signing.

Bring a laptop or ipad and set it up right there for customers to purchase an ebook instead! This may reduce the number of physical books you may sell, but when they are faced with the ability to mass purchase with a credit card, they may decide to get more than one copy!  You can do a pdf copy with your signature and book cover, sending it to them via FB!
(FYI, some of the email browsers do not allow large information packets).

Have the ability to take a credit card! Most people do not carry cash, and if they are at a convention, it goes quickly! Don't self limit yourself by not having this ability! You can use Paypal, or a nifty little device called, "The Square". It plugs right into your smart phone or tablet device! NO MONTHLY FEES EITHER! It is available at Staples, UPS store and other retailers.

HAVE LOT'S OF HELP ON HAND!   Bring at least 2 people! You will be too busy signing and passing out books, chatting with customers. Have someone monitor the books supplies and keeping you informed of where your inventory stands. (guess what? If you run out of books, you can still do singings with the PDF's or ebooks!) Have someone deal only with the ebooks and pdf's! If someone wants a 'personalized' autograph, have a clip board ready for them to put in their name, address, email account if ebook, pdf or paperback is desired. This will be what you do when you have down time. Notify them their book is now available and have them come back at the end of the day to pay for it!

There is always a way to still make sales, even when your physical supply of books are low! Have one of your helpers be good at 'hawking'.  This means, yelling out! LOL... When your table is slow, shout out! "Get your signed copy here!"

Finally, pricing of your book....
I personally think that when you do an 'event' like a convention, you don't 'charge' for signing, it is a 'promotional tool' not an 'add on' for pricing. I would also take into consideration YOUR shipping and handling as well as moving all the stuff in and out, overnight costs. Give yourself at least double the author print cost + your s&h divided by the number of books. Throw in anther $.50-1.00 for YOUR hauling things around. If now your price is UNDER the list price, make sure you put up a sign it is 'ON SALE' !!!
If not, then sell as same as list price (this is the easiest). Your profits are built in, they are getting it right from you and with a signing. Add in state sales tax, or be prepared to pay it out of your profits! Remember, if you were at a general retailer's place, THEY would be selling the book for the list price and YOU would be a FREEBIE thrown in. In other words, when doing signings as a traditionally published author, all of the travel cost is out of YOUR pocket and not reimbursed by your publishing company or the retailer! They just provide the books.

I hope this information is helpful to those new to Retail Marketing, 101...

IN MEMORY OF 9/11

I first would like to make this statement:

"I live in the United States of America, grew up singing the National Anthem in our home and schools, recited the Pledge of Allegiance from kindergarten to my induction in the Navy. I served in her military proudly for six years. I come from a long line of men and women active in protecting these Rights. I believe in the Constitution, Amendments and Civil Liberties.  I Believe in FREEDOM of RELIGION and SPEECH, however, I do not nor will I sanction the hateful atmosphere of persecution of peoples based on RACE, RELIGION, and COUNTRY of ORIGIN."

There is not one man, woman or child alive in America whom has not been effected by the tragedy of 9/11. For the first time in History, the World's Nations suffered together the loss of loved one in one fatal moment in the collapse of the Twin Towers, as America felt the blow of our first large scale attack within our boarders by non-military aggressors.  The World wept with us as new Heroes emerged throughout the day, weeks, months and years since.

I ask you, where ever you are today, Honor their memory by bowing your head in the "MOMENT OF SILENCE" at the designated time for the Nation. Please offer a prayer to whichever Deity you chose, or just reflect on their sacrifice. Pray for those whom perished on 9/11 and since.  For those whom responded in their hour of need and sacrificed their lives or health to save others. To those who now continue to protect and serve our country and the world against terrorism. To the families left behind...

Finally, love those around you with all your heart. Never say 'goodbye' still angry.  Tell the people in your lives how much you care, don't hold back.

God Bless America, and may God Bless You!!
